Reporting to the Production Manager, the Training Superintendent is responsible for the development, administration, and leading the delivery heavy equipment operator training programs on site to deliver organizational objectives. This includes the development of a comprehensive operator training program for the site. The training Superintendent will access heavy earthmoving mining equipment operator training needs and develop appropriate training material and training schedules. He/she will have overall responsibility for the effective deployment of the training effort both in class and in the field through effective planning, implementation, and supervision of field trainers. The role provides support to mining initiatives through aligning equipment operator skill set with operational requirements to deliver operators fit for purpose in terms of safety and productivity. The Training Superintendent will provide oversight for all phases of company-wide heavy equipment operator training and provide feedback on training progress through weekly, monthly, and quarterly presentations to the Production Manager and senior leadership.

Key responsibilities

Training Planning and Assessment

  • Perform consistent, accurate, and reliable assessments on operators’ abilities to operate specific equipment in the field, in a safe, correct, and productive manner to achieve and exceed industry productivity benchmarks.
  • Assesses and determines overall effectiveness of training programs by soliciting feedback from stakeholders and making improvements as necessary.
  • Present results of skills analysis and training needs analysis to stakeholders and senior leadership for consideration and to get necessary approval.
  • Develop comprehensive training materials such as manuals, presentations, and worksheets including standards for each class of machinery considering industry standards and best practices.
  • Review training materials and programs in line with changing business environment to achieve continuous improvement.

Operator Training

  • Championing the effort to train employees in safe and proper methods of heavy equipment operations by managing the execution of training sessions in groups or individually in class or in the field.
  • Provide comprehensive training per machine class to achieve world class operating effectiveness and conformance applicable standards and procedures. 
  • Monitoring and evaluation of the training effort to ensure achievement of the training plans and delivery of the intended training value. 
  • Develop a robust operator competence criterion which includes safety, quality, and quality in passing out of operators as competent.
  • Follow-up with employees in the field who have received training to evaluate learning retention levels and put measures in place to address skills decay.

Leadership

  • Ensure training considerations are considered in business planning and maintaining a strategic training focus.
  • Mentor other instructors in the subject matter, content, and course delivery techniques for heavy mining equipment operator training.
  • Identify individuals with high potential and provide them with training and development opportunities to prepare them for succession role.
  • Recommend/authorize employees to use any additional equipment, including (. e.g. annual assessments/regular re-certifications as needed).
  • Develop relationships with heavy equipment suppliers to maximize the utilization of educational and training resources available to the company.
  • Create a sound working relationship with key stakeholders such as mining production, maintenance and safety which are key in delivering successful operator training.

Performance Management

  • Set training section KPIs for approval by Production Manager and senior management.
  • Monitor and report actual training performance to plan and put measures in place to address deviation.
  • Demonstrate the value addition of training interventions and initiatives to process improvement.

Position requirements

  • Training/ Education related degree / Diploma 
  • Training certifications on heavy equipment operations 
  • 10+ years of operating experience on diverse types of heavy equipment (i.e., Dozers, Front-End Loaders, Motor Graders, Scrapers, etc.)
  • At least 5 years’ experience in developing, administering, and leading heavy equipment operator training programs including use of simulators in operator training (CAT simulator, Immersive Technologies simulator etc.).
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). 
  • French and English language skills are desirable.
  • Experience working in multicultural environments.
  • Strong oral (public-speaking) and written communication skills
  • Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organisation and build effective relationships and networks.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
