The role

The objective of the position is to oversee and coordinate electrical and mechanical maintenance activities relating to a fleet of Loading. The transfer of technical skills and training of the workforce is key to the position. Reporting to the HME Senior Coordinator, this position requires a self-motivated individual to design, implement and oversee the life cycle strategies of equipment in line with the asset management system, plan, and schedule repairs to ensure that a sustainable high level of preventative maintenance is accomplished.

Key responsibilities

General:

  • The key responsibilities apply to the HME Specialist, which is responsible for all facets of maintenance related to the mechanical and electrical systems of the Loading fleet.

Mobile Maintenance:

  • Comply with current site safety culture and compliance to all safety systems is required ;
  • Focus on reliability to ensure all work is carried out in line with OEM and site standards ;
  • Motivate a workforce by experience, knowledge, and respect ;
  • Train and mentor current site personnel and ensure that individual development plans are in place ;
  • Participate in the skills development training and succession planning program for National employees ;
  • Apply industry best practice preventative maintenance and repair techniques ;
  • Minimize the impact of unplanned maintenance on mining and plant production targets ;
  • Investigate possible bottlenecks, areas of concern, existing practices, and source engineering solutions to benefit equipment availability ;
  • Must have the capacity to supervise multi-work fronts safely and effectively ;
  • Ensure all agreed processes and procedures are followed ;
  • Design and develop procedures and policies to suit the environment and resources available ;
  • Maintain level of work performance in accordance with KPI standards and / or work order specifications ;
  • Take responsibility of site resources and supporting equipment to include operational maintenance, daily inspections, and quality control ;
  • Assist in planning and scheduling repairs in line with current maintenance scheduling ;
  • Participate in long term planning, budgeting, and asset management activities ;
  • Minimize equipment downtime events to enable optimized performance and reliability ;
  • Provide solutions and engineering methods of repair in line with OEM standards ;
  • Provide detailed failure analysis reports ;
  • Ensure that daily inspections are diligently done on all the equipment under your control.

Cost:

  • Be responsible and accountable for the allocated budget and all costs associated with the maintenance of the mechanical and electrical systems of the Loading fleet ;
  • Work with Management to prepare the annual budget based on equipment hours and condition ;
  • Manage maintenance personnel, contractors, and equipment in the most cost-effective manner possible.

Policy, Procedure and Process Development:

  • Ensure that all policies and strategies are clearly documented following best practice ; 
  • Develop and implement Safe Working Instructions ; 
  • Work collaboratively with the Maintenance Superintendent and the Supply department to ensure appropriate stock is always on hand to maintain mobile equipment availability ;
  • Recommend improvements to any process that may lead to a safer and more productive environment.

Reports, Procedure and Process Development:

  • Ensure all administrative duties and procedures are always adhered to ;
  • Ensure that all reporting requirements are carried out on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis ;
  • Provide input to the monthly operational report and cost variance report as requested ;
  • Provide failure reports, damage, and operational reporting as directed ;
  • Must have the ability to work with planning and carry out the planned and scheduled work scopes daily.

Innovation and Improvement:

  • Identify, investigate, and implement improvements to the operating performance of the mobile fleet ;
  • Promote and support the Business Improvement initiatives on site.

Systems:

  • Develop and promote compliance with the Mobile fleet maintenance system ;
  • Ensure that the site ERP Software (Pronto) is used efficiently ;
  • Support and comply with all reporting requirements.

Information:

  • Produce accurate and timely information for the Maintenance meeting.
  • Participate in weekly planning meetings with maintenance team.
  • Ensure that the CMMS are updated accordingly.
  • Ensure the raising and closing of work orders.
  • Training and coaching of subordinates in the preparation of work packages and all other functions for each maintenance work group within the organization.
  • Regularly review of spares holdings for maintenance activities and advise the Planning section on upcoming requirements.
  • Aim to reduce the reliance on airfreight.
  • Attending regular meetings as directed with maintenance personnel to review equipment performance, develop remedial actions and improvement plans for cost and performance.
  • Assist in the development of the departmental budget, with effort towards producing a Zero-based maintenance budget.
  • Work with the HME Superintendent to develop tracking and reporting systems for agreed KPI's to allow accurate and quick analysis of maintenance, breakdowns, costs, and operating performance of all equipment under your responsibility.

Safety:

  • Ensure that all maintenance is performed in a safe and cost-effective manner through the efficient use of available resources (personnel and equipment). ;
  • Ensure that all staff conduct themselves in a safe manner in accordance with company policies, procedures and benchmark a ‘Take 5’ and Duty of Care safety focus.

Position requirements

Knowledge, Training & Relevant experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience maintaining Heavy Mining Equipment mechanical and electrical systems.
  • 8 years’ experience supervising a maintenance team in a developing country (preferably Africa).
  • Possess a formal certification qualification with experience in the HME maintenance area.
  • Prior experience on all facets of electrical maintenance.
  • Experienced using a CMMS to provide accurate prediction of future activities and costs.
  • Experience in the use of OEM software applications.
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft office and knowledge of ERP software, preferably Pronto.
  • Driver’s License essential.
  • Good knowledge and skills pertaining to mentoring, coaching, and training.
  • Multitasking capabilities across the mining fleet.

Practical/Specialist Skills:

  • Must be dependable, dedicated to getting the job done correctly, and use time wisely.
  • Adopt a problem-solving attitude to new situations and challenges. 
  • Ability to satisfactorily work with others respectfully and professionally in a team environment, and provide reasonable instructions, training, and supervision.
  • Communication skills in English (French is an asset) to effectively interact with employees. 
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated people management experience including ability to coach and mentor team members of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, think laterally and meet deadlines.
