Reporting to the Production Manager, the Training Superintendent is responsible for the development, administration, and leading the delivery of heavy equipment operator training programs on site to deliver organizational objectives. This includes the development of a comprehensive operator training program for the site. The training Superintendent will access heavy earthmoving mining equipment operator training needs and develop appropriate training material and training schedules. He/she will have overall responsibility for the effective deployment of the training effort both in class and in the field through effective planning, implementation, and supervision of field trainers. The role provides support to mining initiatives through aligning equipment operator skill set with operational requirements to deliver operators fit for purpose in terms of safety and productivity. The Training Superintendent will provide oversight for all phases of company-wide heavy equipment operator training and provide feedback on training progress through weekly, monthly, and quarterly presentations to the Production Manager and senior leadership.

Key responsibilities

Training Planning and Assessment

  •  Design, develop, and deliver training programs to enhance operator and supervisor skills, ensuring alignment with mining KPIs such as:

o    Safety performance metrics (e.g., incident frequency rates).
o    Equipment availability and utilization.
o    Cycle time efficiency.
o    Production output and quality.

  • Conduct training needs analysis to identify skills gaps impacting key operational metrics.
  • Establish measurable training objectives that directly support the improvement of operational and safety KPIs.
  • Set training targets and objectives and collect training performance data to measure training performance.

Operator Training

  •  Design and implement comprehensive operator training programs to ensure competency in operating mining equipment such as haul trucks, loaders, excavators, crushers, and drill rigs.
  • Develop and maintain operator certification processes, ensuring all operators meet regulatory and company standards.
  • Conduct hands-on training sessions and simulations for operators to enhance their technical skills and safe equipment operation practices.
  • Work with maintenance and operations teams to ensure operators are trained to optimize equipment performance and minimize downtime.
  • Establish protocols for new operator onboarding, refresher courses, and cross-training for multi-equipment operation.
  • Introduce advanced operator training tools such as simulators or augmented reality (AR) technologies to enhance learning outcomes.
  • Develop programs to equip supervisors with leadership, communication, and operational oversight skills.
  • Train supervisors to identify operator skill gaps and ensure consistent application of training standards across teams.

Leadership

  • Lead and mentor a team of training professionals to deliver high-quality, site-specific training programs.
  • Collaborate with site supervisors, maintenance teams, and senior management to identify and prioritize training needs.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning, teamwork, and operational excellence.
  • Ensure training considerations are considered in business planning and maintaining a strategic training focus.
  • Mentor other instructors in the subject matter, content, and course delivery techniques for heavy mining equipment operator training
  • Develop relationships with heavy equipment suppliers to maximize the utilization of educational and training resources available to the company
  • Create a sound working relationship with key stakeholders such as mining production, maintenance and safety which are key in delivering successful operator training.
  • Schedule sectional meetings of the training section as platforms to give feedback to the team, review progress and set objectives
  • Review performance of field trainers to ensure consistent and timeous delivery of quality equipment operators.

Performance Management

  • Monitor and report actual training performance to plan and put measures in place to address deviation
  • Demonstrate the value addition of training interventions and initiatives to process improvement
  • Track and analyze the effectiveness of training programs on operator performance and operational KPIs.
  • Provide regular reports to management, including training hours completed, operator certification status, and impacts on mining KPIs.
  • Maintain accurate training records, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Compliance

  •  Ensuring that training content is in perfect alignment with company policies, standards and procedures and meets best practice benchmarks and legislation.

 

Safety Management

  • Demonstrate personal commitment regarding safety and standard operating practices.
  • Ensure that agreed procedures, safeguards and controls are applied and used.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted safely and in accordance with Company standards and procedures
  • Ensure hazard management plans are observed.
  • Keep statutory and internal reporting as required.
  •  Active participation to the Health & Safety Committee.

Position requirements

  • Training/ Education related degree / Diploma
  • Training certifications on heavy equipment operations
  • 10+ years of operating experience on diverse types of heavy equipment (i.e., Dozers, Front-End Loaders, Motor Graders, Scrapers, etc.)
  • Multi skilled i.e., able to operate an excavator, dump truck and any other heavy earthmoving equipment
  • At least 5 years’ experience in developing, administering, and leading heavy equipment operator training programs including use of simulators in operator training.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • French and English language skills are desirable.
