“One Village Without Malaria” Project Launched in partnership between the Endeavour Foundation and Burkina Faso Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene

  • The Endeavour Foundation has partnered with the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene in Burkina Faso to benefit 1,150 people to make Dangouna a village without malaria by June 2023

  • The signing of this protocol was in celebration of World Malaria Day 2022

  • The pilot project is part of Endeavour’s Malaria Control Programme, which is a key priority in our ESG healthcare strategy

Today, on World Malaria Day, we are reminded that the fight to eliminate malaria continues for millions around the globe. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported an estimated 241 million malaria cases in 2020 which was a 14 million case increase compared to the previous year, mostly due to COVID-19 disruptions to preventative and diagnostic initiatives.

This setback makes the global effort to fight the disease even more important. In 2021, to emphasise Endeavour’s commitment to reducing malaria, we included the reduction in case-rate as part of our annual company-wide KPIs and we are proud that our malaria incidence rate fell by 19% year on year.

As a next step in our fight against malaria, on 22 April, together with the Burkinabe Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene, we signed a memorandum of understanding for the "One Village Without Malaria" project in Burkina Faso as part of the National Malaria Control Plan.

This community pilot project will benefit over 1,150 people in the Dangouna village and aims to reduce the incidence of malaria by 90% by February 2023 and to achieve a 0% malaria mortality rate by the June. These objectives are part of Burkina Faso’s country-wide target of 75% reduction in malaria cases and 0% mortality rate.

We are happy to contribute to this project and support the efforts of the Burkinabé government which is continually developing projects and programmes to eradicate this preventable disease

Working with the Mouhoun region’s authorities on the Dangouna project fits well within Endeavour’s approach to collaborate with local, regional and central government authorities to align our malaria strategy with the broader activities already underway and reinforce this with local community engagement and awareness campaigns.

Across our operations in malaria endemic locations, Endeavour’s Malaria Control Programme, with slogan ‘Zero Malaria starts with me’, has a multifaceted approach at the communities and site level which include the provision of impregnated mosquito nets, indoor residual spraying inside homes and buildings, and the reduction of the amount of stagnant water on site, which is a breeding ground for the insects.

Similarly, the "One Village Without Malaria" project aims to strengthen care in communities and at health and social centres, as well as provide comprehensive information, advocacy sessions, and communication and vector control activities.

The Burkinabé Minister of Health representative showed the government’s appreciation for the collaboration, saying “with the support of the Endeavour Foundation, the eradication of malaria in the village of Dangouna and in future other beneficiary villages could be a reality”.

Endeavour, through its Foundation, will contribute 100 million CFA to advance the "One Village Without Malaria" project in the coming years. Furthermore, in 2022, alongside our regular onsite malaria prevention campaign and activities, we plan to undertake community prevention projects at our Ity and Sadodala-Massawa mines.
